Marriage and Family Counseling

Family counseling, also known as marriage and family counseling, family systems counseling, and interpersonal counseling, are an area of psychotherapy which aims to understand the family system from the perspective of the family. It also aims to facilitate development within the family system. It was first developed by Sigmund Freud. The basic aim was to understand Freud's theory of family development. It has been called "the theory of the id", "the theory of primordial instincts", and "family systems and family structure".

The field of family counseling has become so broad that it includes not only clinical work but also research studies as well as literature on family development, child rearing, parenting, socialization, and well-being. In recent years, it has been used in educational settings as a psychological treatment for many disorders such as anxiety disorders, developmental disorders, post traumatic stress disorders, adjustment disorders, schizophrenia, and alcoholism. It has also been used in the treatment of such diverse individuals as aging and cancer patients.

Family counselors are highly trained individuals who specialize in the family counseling process. They help couples and families deal with some of life's most difficult issues. This can include overcoming anger, violence, depression, conflict, and other life obstacles. Many times, these counselors help individuals and families deal with the issues which lead to such problems. Some of the most common areas of focus for these counselors include communication and behavior modification, family development, self-esteem building, conflict resolution, adjustment disorders, pornography, family stressors, child adjustment, and adjustment disorders in young children.

The International Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (IAMFCT) is the global association of marriage and family therapists. Its mission is "to advance professional practice and education in relationship and family counseling". The IAMFCT provides a variety of resources for marriage and family therapists to enhance their practice. Among its many services are international assessments, case studies, educational planning, and supervision. In addition, the IAMFCT offers an annual Certification Program on Practitioners' Pathfinders Program, which is designed to provide well-trained therapists with a certification that demonstrates that they have completed an approved set of approved practical examinations.

In addition to providing family counseling, the International Association for Marriage and Family Counseling has developed the Practitioner's Pathfinders Program to provide competent, trained family counselors to families throughout the United States and the world. The Practitioner's Pathfinders Program trains family counselors, as well as spouses and partners, and other qualified individuals, in relationship and family counseling. Candidates must successfully complete an approved Practitioner's Pathfinders Examination and then pass a certified exam. After completion of this two-step process, candidates are awarded their certification.
